WHAT MEDICATIONS ARE REQUIRED TO KEEP DOGS FREE OF WORMS?

0

There are many ways to make sure that your dog remains worms-free. The best way is to prevent its exposure to parasites. Most of the parasites, which are found in your pet’s intestine like ringworms, hookworms, whipworms, and roundworm found in gastrointestinal tract etc, enter your dog through its mouth or by other secondary mediums like fleas. So, if your pet’s access to areas where this is likely to happen is restricted or is done under supervision, you will minimize its chances of contracting these parasites.

Other than this, the monthly veterinarians’ visits can also help in keeping your pet free of such parasites or worms. Ambassador Animal Hospital, have the best vets in Windsor that are highly experienced and knowledgeable about vaccinations and medications required to save your pet from worms. Some of which are mentioned below –

Pyrantel Pamoate: This is a safe drug that is prescribed by our veterinarians to treat hookworms and roundworms in pets.  It works by making the worms unable to move so that the body can remove them naturally in the stool.

Fenbendazole: This drug prescribed by our vets is used to kill intestinal parasites like roundworms, whipworms, hookworms, tapeworms, giardia, etc in dogs and is often prescribed for cats as well. It might be a better choice when diarrhoea is suspected to be due to intestinal parasites and the identity of those parasites remains unknown.

Praziquantel: This is an antihelminthic medication that is used in veterinary medicine to help treat cats and dogs that have developed tapeworms and is extremely effective in doing so.

Praziquantel/Pyrantel Pamoate/Febantel: These drugs in a combined medication form can treat infections caused by parasitic worms in dogs. The febantel portion is particularly effective in killing whipworms and disables the organisms allowing the body to destroy them.

Epsiprantel: It is a single dose medication that is highly effective against tapeworms (cestodes) in dogs and cats.

Ponazuril: Ponazuril is a drug which is used to treat protozoal & coccidial infections common in affected pets like dogs and cats usually present with diarrhoea.

Metronidazole: It is an antibiotic & antiprotozoal medication used to inflammatory bowel disease, nonspecific diarrheal disorders, infections caused by Giardia (a cause of diarrhoea), and periodontal disease.

Ivermectin: Ivermectin is an anti-parasite medication given to dogs to prevent heartworm disease and to treat various other parasite-related conditions like demodectic and sarcoptic mange, and ear mites.

Piperazine: This drug is used for the treatment of ascarid infestations, in other words, roundworm and must be given several times. Piperazine will only kill roundworms that are living in the pet’s intestine and are used to treat certain parasitic roundworm infestations of the gastrointestinal tract.

All the above medications are safe and effective when recommended by our veterinarians Windsor experts and they do have side effects if not used as per our vets’ directions or guidance.
